PILOXING is the latest Hollywood Celebrity fitness craze sweeping the nation. Chances are your local gym has already started offering the classes!
PILOXING uniquely mixes Pilates and boxing into a fat torching and muscle sculpting workout guaranteed to whip you into shape. The motto is “Sleek. Sexy. Powerful” and you’ll achieve this by burning around 800 calories a session! PILOXING was created by Swedish dancer and celebrity trainer Viveca Jensen and is the culmination of her mission to physically and mentally empower women through fitness. The core of PILOXING is that feminine is powerful!
I had a chance to try out PILOXING at the original PILOXING Academy in Los Angeles. I wasn’t sure what to expect as the online videos featuring super fit girls wearing pink spandex were more than intimidating! Upon entering the studio I was greeted by the rest of the girls waiting to start the class and nobody was wearing a pink spandex. People were dressed in casual workout clothes like you’d see in any other fitness class. The instructor Lindsey came in and actually came right up and introduced herself to me. It was great to see a teacher taking a personal interest in every student in her class!
The studio is small with a full Pilates studio on one side and the PILOXING studio on the other. Everything is clean and fresh inside with beautiful hardwood floors and top of the line equipment. Since it was my first class I was given a complimentary rental of the weighted gloves you wear while taking the class.
The class begins with a short warm-up and then you get right into flipping back and forth between boxing and Pilates in an extremely high-energy, fast-paced workout. There are small moments where you can catch your breath but for the most part you are working the entire time. The moves are surprisingly easy to follow and repeat in sequences in case you miss it the first time. The music is also loud and fast-paced which adds to the entire experience. Lindsey came over to me several times to make sure I was doing the moves correctly and her words of encouragement really helped! The weighted gloves added another aspect to the workout making you feel like you were doing something even when you were just punching the air.
Don’t get me wrong, there were definitely a few moments when I thought I was going to just give up and sit in the corner but I breathed through it and by the end I felt amazing! I can see why this has become such a worldwide craze because it is such a great workout and the boxing sequences and dance moves are simply fun to do. It is hard though – definitely one of the hardest fitness classes I’ve ever taken so rest up before and expect to pilox your fancy off!
BARE IT – Expect to take the class barefoot. They do allow you to take the class with sneakers but the teacher will explain that it is much easier to keep up barefoot since sneakers can be clunky. Most of girls in the class were barefoot.
LIGHTEN UP – Wear light clothing! You will sweat a lot and the moves are pretty quick so this isn’t the class to wear your baggy sweatpants too. I recommend capri leggings and a tank top.
COOL IT – Bring water. You can take water breaks anytime during the class and jump right back into it. I found myself stopping several times.
BEST BUDS – Bring a buddy! There is a social aspect to the class and a friend will help motivate you and keep it fun.
