A Healthy Lifestyle for a Healthy Hearing

Posted in Wellness Add comments

Hearing loss used to be associated only with the elderly people. Yet, today it affects all people from different ages and walks of life. The main factor for this is the person’s choice of lifestyle. Many people have not realized that healthy living has a direct correlation with being able to hear properly. It is also important to keep in mind that various medical diseases can cause hearing loss. Hence, living a cautious and healthy lifestyle helps prevent hearing loss from happening to a person. Healthy living begins with proper exercise and right amount of nutrition. Read on and learn some healthy living tips to protect one’s hearing abilities.

Always Keep the Blood Sugar in Check

According to the National Institute of Health, people suffering from diabetes are more likely to experience loss of hearing later on in life. Diabetes can be prevented through proper exercise and diet. Also, to avoid any health imbalances during the pre-diabetic state, make sure to check the blood sugar levels regularly.

Quit Smoking

Smoking does not only damage one’s breathing abilities, but also literally chokes the cells throughout the body, including those inside the ears. Dried out skin cells can no longer replace the cilia, making it difficult for a person to pick up or hear sound waves. The New York School of Medicine reported a study showing that smoking doubles the risk of experiencing loss of hearing amongst youths.

Exercise Regularly

Statistics shows that overweight people experienced poor blood circulation, putting them at a higher risk for loss of hearing. Poor circulation can be treated through regular exercise such as swimming, cycling, and walking. Regular exercise should be an integral part of every person’s lifestyle to avoid hearing loss.

Protect the Ears from Loud Sounds

Together with an exercise regimen and a healthy diet, it is also important to protect the ears from potential damage to prevent hearing loss from occurring. For instance, loud music can impair one’s eardrums, which can eventually lead to hearing loss.  Turning down the volume of the music prevents ear damage while listening to it. Also, if a person is working in an area that is exposed to high-pitched or very loud sounds, wearing earplugs consistently while working is very important. Wearing earplugs help prevent hearing loss as they keep the person away from getting exposed to loud sounds while working.

Living a healthy lifestyle reduces the chances of experiencing hearing loss. The way a person lives now, what they eat and how much rest and exercise they get, certainly impacts their body, as well as their hearing ability.

Nevertheless, for those who experienced hearing loss, make sure to visit a doctor and discuss all options available. Depending on the current hearing levels, the doctor may prescribe the use of hearing aids to help increase one’s hearing. One may also work on managing the hearing loss by asking others to speak a little louder and clearer and by facing the person. Yet, it is always wise to prevent hearing loss before it actually happens. Prevention is more worthwhile and easier than taking care of a severe medical illness.
